how to cleanse, nourish & rejuvenate

Have you done something healthy for yourself lately? This weekend I took some time out to visit the fabulous Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. It was super fun and truly inspiring to be among the beautiful leafy greens, fragrant citrus fruits and vibrant sweet berries. One of my purchases was a lovely bouquet of fresh mint, which I’ve been using to make a soothing delicious tea and adding in a few lemon wedges for an extra boost of healing Vitamin C.

Spring is a great time to shift your focus and incorporate more cleansing foods into your life and eating plan. Spring is also a time to “love your liver!” Did you know our livers play a HUGE role in balancing hormones, detoxifying our bodies and supporting weight loss? Yes, it’s true. The liver plays a central role in all metabolic processes in the body when it comes to fat metabolism and filtering out toxins. In a nutshell, your liver processes anything you eat or drink, and either repackages it for your body to use or eliminates it. Many foods help support excellent liver health – some include plant-based proteins like beans, legumes and lentils, avocados, nuts, pumpkin seeds, lemons and ginger. Dandelion and milk thistle are also great liver detoxifies and are especially good for many women moving through menopause or peri-menopause.

As you move forward into the spring season, consider trying out the drinks below, as they will help cleanse and detox your body and create a happier, lighter, and more refreshed  you. And while sipping your healing elixirs, consider taking a moment to show gratitude to your amazing liver for all the hard work it does daily in keeping you trim, fit, healthy, and balanced. Begin by putting your hand on your liver (which is on your right side of your body below your rib cage) and move it around gently in clockwise circles while saying “I love you liver!” Because a happy liver = a happier life.

Dandelion tea/Ginger tea/Green tea

There’s nothing like a cup of warm tea in the morning or the end of a long day to help us feel relaxed and calm.

Ginger reduces inflammation and helps the digestive processes, and dandelion purifies the liver and kidneys, removing toxins and impurities.

Simply add 2 teaspoons of crushed dandelion leaves, ginger or green tea to a cup of boiling water. Allow it to brew for about 10 minutes.

*Tip: You can also try Traditional Medicinals Organic Roasted Dandelion Root tea bags. Or NUMI brand is another wonderful tea company full of “clean label” teas.

Spring Fresh Mint and Lemon Recipe

I’m a BIG fan of drinking hot water and lemon before and/or after meals for its cleansing effects, weight loss benefits and better digestion attributes. With the warmer weather upon us, the recipe below is another great way to cleanse and heal the body while also aiding digestion.

2 lemons
½ cucumber
10-12 mint leaves
3 quarts water

Mix and chill overnight in a pitcher. Pour, drink and enjoy.
