ch ch ch chia!

Okay, I’ll admit it…I’ve found a new love…CHIA SEEDS! I have come to love this new superfood for many great reasons…its nutritional value, its metabolism and energy boosting properties and its ease of digestibility! (Wow, that’s a lot of fabulous reasons to love a superfood!)

I first started hearing about the benefits of this tiny morsel a year ago, from my friend Beth.  After a play date with her little guy, my little guy came home raving about her homemade banana bread…asking me: “Mom, can you learn how to make it?” Sure I can!  So with that, I found out Beth added chia seeds to the recipe for an extra big bang boost of nutrition! (Way to go Beth!)  I was intrigued and set out to find out all I could about Chia!  I began doing nutritional research and also discovered ways my family, clients and I could incorporate these little seeds into our lives…below is some of what I’ve learned…

Originally known as “Indian Running Food” these super seeds are just what you might be looking for to perk up that beautiful body and create energy and endurance! First off, they are BURSTING with nutrition – loaded with high amounts of Omega-3s, calcium, boron, magnesium, antioxidants and protein these little guys are a wonderful addition to any healthy eating plan. They are  super high in soluble fiber and can hold up to 14 times their weight in water – which means they become gel-like in your food and as a result, they slow down the digestion process.  This then translates into reduced appetite…which then translates into WEIGHT LOSS! (Yahoo! A natural, healthy appetite suppressant!)  Second, chia seeds are an excellent food for helping to stabilize and control blood sugar levels…which in turn can mean reduced cravings and improved mood!  And lastly, these tiny, tiny seeds don’t need to be ground up like flax seeds and do an amazing job of cleaning and sweeping that old “junk” left inside our bodies –  namely our intestines (not a pretty picture I know, but very good for our health and longevity!)

I love adding a tablespoon of chia seeds to my morning protein shake for extra energy, reduced hunger and just a plain overall feeling of wellness! You can also try adding some seeds to your salads or yogurt parfaits!  Clients and friends of mine have also incorporated these seeds into recipes like turkey meatballs, sauces,  stews and baked goods.  (H.N. tip…This is a great way to sneak a bit of good nutrition into your kids’ meals! Shhh!)

So if you are looking for a way to boost your metabolism, create some energy and curb your appetite I would recommend giving chia seeds a try!

PS…if you happen to see my little guy…please don’t tell him his mommy puts those wondrous healthy seeds in his banana bread…some good things are just better left unsaid…Thanks!
